Best romantic restaurants in Rio de Janeiro: The guide to special occasions
Rio de Janeiro has a solid restaurant scene, and it doesn't disappoint when it comes to finding a romantic space, whether you're planning a date, a marriage proposal or simply a special moment. What sets the best romantic restaurants in Rio de Janeiro apart goes beyond the food: the setting and the decor do a lot of the work in creating the atmosphere.
I organized this list by cuisine, so you can pick based on what you're in the mood for. For a Michelin-starred night out specifically, I cover those separately in my guide to Rio's luxury experiences.
And if you're planning a full trip around moments like this, my 7-day itinerary for couples already has several of these restaurants built in.
Romantic restaurants in Rio de Janeiro: Contemporary Brazilian cuisine
I explain in my guide to Rio's best restaurants why I think Brazilian cuisine should be the focus of any trip here, and a romantic dinner is no exception. These are the spots where that food comes with an atmosphere to match.
Elena Horto
Tucked into Horto, the pocket-sized neighborhood behind the Botanical Garden and worth spending some time, Elena is my go-to pick for a romantic dinner in the area. It's an intimate space with a menu that doesn't try too hard, just really good food in a setting that feels like a well-kept secret.
📍 Rua Pacheco Leão, 758, Jardim Botânico
Aprazível
An institution in Santa Teresa, Aprazível pairs Brazilian cooking with great views. The kitchen leans on organic ingredients and regional flavors, the kind of food that carries memory as much as taste. Seating spreads across gazebos, gardens, and a terrace overlooking Guanabara Bay, giving the whole space a rustic elegance rather than a fussy one.
📍 Rua Aprazivel, 62, Santa Teresa
Páreo
Set near the Jockey Club, Páreo has one of the most coveted views in Rio: Pedra da Gávea, Christ the Redeemer, and Morro Dois Irmãos all visible from the same table, with the racetrack below. The menu draws on Brazilian cooking with an upscale touch, served in a cozy, unpretentious dining room that matches the view rather than competing with it.
📍 Rua Mario Ribeiro, 410, Jockey Club
Italian Cuisine for romantic moments
They say Italian is the safest bet for a date, and Rio has no shortage of excellent Italian restaurants to prove it. The four below are the ones I'd pick for atmosphere: refined rooms with real charm, not the checkered-tablecloth cantina vibe.
Dom Camillo
A Copacabana classic, with tables both inside and along the sidewalk facing the ocean, for anyone who doesn't want to look away from the view, even for a second. There's live music every night, and the food is consistently good, great value for what you get.
📍 Avenida Atlântica, 3056, Copcabana
Alba Botafogo
Set inside a historic mansion in Botafogo, with tables spread across the garden and low lighting throughout, Alba has the kind of charm that does most of the work for you. It's the sort of place where the room itself sets the tone before the food even arrives.
📍 Rua Martins Ferreira, 60, Botafogo
Grado
In Jardim Botânico, inside a restored historic house, Grado runs on a fixed menu, appetizer, main, and dessert, no decision fatigue, just good food in the right order. The setting matches the concept: charming without trying too hard, the kind of place built for a slow, unhurried dinner.
📍 Rua Visconde de Carandaí, 31, Jardim Botânico
Gero
Inside Hotel Fasano, Gero is the priciest of the four, and worth it for an occasion that calls for a splurge. Perfect for classic Italian dishes, meat, and fish, in a room with a modern, bold edge. In a warm night the open-air veranda matches the city way of doing things outdoors.
📍 Avenida Vieira Souto, 80, Ipanema
Asian and Japanese restaurants for date nights
If you want to dive into Asian food and still keep things romantic, those places bring Asian sensibility to the table, from understated setting to full sensory production.
Céline Sushi Lounge
In Barra da Tijuca, Céline has a sophisticated setting to match its sushi: plating built to engage the senses through the ingredients. I've been and recommend to try the all-you-can-eat style, with an impressive presentation.
📍 Erico Veríssimo, 843, Barra da Tijuca
San
Located in Leblon, San goes for intimacy over spectacle: a small, understated room built for a quiet, high-end sushi dinner. The kind of place where the focus stays on the food and the person across the table.
📍 Rua Humberto de Campos, 827, Leblon
MEE
Inside Copacabana Palace, the opposite approach: MEE is a full production, a pan-Asian menu spanning Japan, Korea, Thailand, China, and India, with omakase for those who want to hand the decisions over to the kitchen, and more than 25 sakes to choose from.
📍 Avenida Atlantica, 1702, Copacabana
Romantic bars in Rio de Janeiro
These three lean more bar than restaurant, but only one of them, Liz, is strictly drinks and appetizers. Libo and Cedilha both have a full menu if you want to make a night of it, not just a stop before or after dinner somewhere else.
Liz Cocktail & Wine
A sophisticated cocktail bar in Ipanema built for exactly this: low light, good music, and drinks that are as thought out as the food elsewhere on this list. It's a small space, so it feels more like a shared secret than a night out, ideal for a first date or the middle of a longer night when you just want to keep talking.
📍 Rua Dias Ferreira, 679, Leblon
Libo
Set inside a converted house in Botafogo, Libo mixes bar and a kitchen that doesn’t disappoint. Order a few starters or a full meal, a couple of cocktails, and let the evening move at its own pace.
📍 Rua Conde de Irajá, 90, Botafogo
Cedilha
On the ground floor of Hotel Janeiro, Cedilha has the Leblon beach as its backdrop and runs on the same quiet confidence as the neighborhood around it: a well-dressed room, a serious drinks list, and food good enough to anchor a full dinner if that's what you're after. It works equally well as a first stop or the whole night.
📍 Avenida Bartolomeu Mitre, 15, Leblon
Romantic restaurants in unique settings
The last two on this list aren't grouped by cuisine because the setting itself is the reason to go. Each one was built around a story you won't find anywhere else in the city.
Os Esquilos
Inside Tijuca Forest, in a mansion that's been serving dinner since 1945, and it's still run with a menu mixes Brazilian and international dishes or fondue to eat surrounded by rainforest, a setting no other restaurant on this list can match.
📍 Estrada Barão de Escragnolle, Alto da Boa Vista
Hansl
Perched in Alto Joá with a view over Barra da Tijuca, Hansl has called itself Rio's most romantic restaurant since 1967. The candlelit dining room and Austrian menu still lean into that reputation. It's the kind of place where making the trip out feel like the occasion itself.
📍 Rua Prof Julio Lohman, 132, Joá

Not all samba experiences in Rio are the same. If Lapa is all about nightlife and Pedra do Sal is famous for its crowds, Downtown Rio is where you'll find relaxed weekend street samba in the heart of the city's historic center.
