The best restaurants in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro: Cafés, bars and feijoada

Ipanema has a reputation for designer boutiques and postcard sunsets, but anyone who actually lives here knows the real wealth is at the table.

Ipanema is one of the most cosmopolitan corners of the city, so my guide to the best restaurants in Ipanema isn't limited to Brazilian food alone. It goes wider, with italian and Portuguese cuisine, botecos, ice cream, alongside the churrasco and feijoada you'd expect.

If you want an emphasis on Brazilian cuisine and the dishes that define this country's food identity, check out my guide to the best restaurants in Rio de Janeiro first.

Here, we're staying local: the places I actually go to in Ipanema, roughly in the order you'll need them throughout the day.

Best cafes in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

Ipanema mornings have a rhythm: coffee first, beach after. There's the quick version with a coffee and a warm pão de queijo standing at a padaria counter, and there's the full breakfast version, sat down at a sidewalk table, taken slowly.

Both are legitimate ways to start the day here, but if you have the time, it's the second one that I recommend. Two spots do it better than anyone else in the neighborhood:

Talho Capixaba

Bakery and deli that's been part of the neighborhood since 2021. Order a fresh-baked croissant, one of their 25-plus bread varieties, or do what locals do: pick up one of their breakfast-to-go kits and take it picnic-style to Lagoa or down to the sand.

📍 Rua Barão da Torre, 354

Padaria Ipanema

A classic bakery that first opened its doors in 1911, and came back in November 2025 as a full-blown 24-hour gastronomic hub: bakery, bar, restaurant, and rooftop terrace all under one roof, with the original facade lovingly restored.
Come for breakfast or come at 3am for a coxinha; either way works here.

📍 Rua Visconde de Pirajá, 325

Best botecos in Ipanema

If cafés are how Ipanema starts the day, botecos are how it unwinds. This is the ritual of cold draft beer, a table on the sidewalk, and a plate of something to share. Two spots capture that spirit better than most.

Paz e Amor

A bar and restaurant tucked into a quiet, charming corner of Ipanema. The vibe is informal and easygoing, and the kitchen serves up generous portions of classic Brazilian dishes. The kind of place you sit down at for one beer and stay for two hours.

📍 Rua Garcia d'Ávila, 173

Belmonte

A Carioca classic with locations scattered across the city, but the Ipanema address is the standout: in 2024 it opened its largest branch yet here, with a rooftop overlooking the sea. Come for the cold chopp, stay for the view.

📍 Av. Vieira Souto, 234

Best feijoada in Ipanema

Casa da Feijoada

Feijoada is traditionally a Friday-or-Saturday-only affair in Rio, the kind of heavy, slow-cooked meal Cariocas save for the weekend. Casa da Feijoada breaks that rule on purpose with it's served every day, lunch and dinner, all-you-can-eat style: one price gets you as many rounds as you want.
Open since 1989, it's not the cheapest feijoada in the city, but it's a reliable option.

📍 Rua Prudente de Morais, 10-B

Best steakhouses in Ipanema

Esplanada Grill

A small dining room on a quiet corner of Ipanema that’s been voted the best steakhouse in Rio thirteen times over. This is an à la carte churrascaria and the ritual here starts before the meat even arrives: an excellent wine list, a maître d' who'll steer you toward the right bottle, and a couvert so good (cheese bread included) that regulars order it on purpose.
Expect an elegant crowd and the occasional celebrity sighting at the next table.

📍 Rua Barão da Torre, 600

Maria e o Boi

Tucked into a charming corner house, this is where chef Vanessa Rocha turns out Brazilian cuisine that’s earned the restaurant a Bib Gourmand nod from the Michelin Guide. Portions are generous and prices fair for the quality, with standouts like slow-braised beef ribs finished with a truffled cheese purée.

📍 Rua Maria Quitéria, 111

Best braseiro in Ipanema

Pura Brasa

Not sure what a braseiro is? I've written a whole explainer on why it might be my favorite Rio food tradition, but the short version is: charcoal-grilled galeto, steaks, and sides meant for sharing, in a casual neighborhood setting.

Pura Brasa is Ipanema's best version of it, sitting right on the corner of Barão da Torre and Vinícius de Moraes, an easy stop between a beach afternoon and dinner elsewhere.

📍 Rua Barão da Torre, 248

Best Portuguese restaurants in Ipanema

Portuguese food isn't a novelty in Rio. It's practically baked into the city's DNA, a legacy of colonization and the waves of Portuguese immigrants who shaped Rio's grocery stores, bakeries, and botecos long before "fusion cuisine" was a phrase anyone used. Ipanema has several solid options for it, but these two are the ones I actually recommend.

Mercearia da Praça

Part restaurant, part grocery, part wine cellar, Mercearia da Praça has anchored Praça General Osório long enough to become the go-to spot for homesick Portuguese expats in Rio. The wine list alone justifies the trip: over 1,300 Portuguese labels, the largest selection in Brazil. Come for the bacalhau, stay for the pastéis de nata.

📍 Rua Jangadeiros, 28

Gajos D'Ouro

Born from the ashes of Antiquarius, Rio's legendary (and now-closed) Portuguese institution, Gajos D'Ouro was founded by a group of former Antiquarius staff determined to keep the old recipes alive. The arroz de pato and bacalhau à lagareiro are the dishes people order it for.

📍 Rua Aníbal de Mendonça, 31

Best Italian restaurants in Ipanema

Ipanema's Italian scene ranges from hotel-glam to neighborhood-casual, and the two spots below cover both ends without missing a beat.

Gero

Located inside the Hotel Fasano, Gero has been Ipanema's go-to for elevated Italian since the restaurant moved into the hotel in 2020, bringing with it a wraparound view of the beach that few dining rooms in Rio can match. The menu classic without being stuffy: the oven-roasted lamb and the spaghetti carbonara are dishes to order without even opening the menu.

📍 Av. Vieira Souto, 80

Cantina da Praça

The "sister" restaurant to Mercearia da Praça (right across the same square), Cantina da Praça is Ipanema's most unpretentious Italian option with fresh pasta made in-house daily, a menu that runs from breakfast through dinner, and prices that don't require a special occasion to justify.

📍 Rua Jangadeiros, 28

Best pizza in Ipanema

Rio doesn't have the deep pizza tradition of São Paulo, but Ipanema is home to two names that would hold their own anywhere, one built on technical pedigree, the other on a story that started with a wood-fired oven bolted to a trailer.

Ferro e Farinha

The origin story here is part of the appeal: a New Yorker fresh off the boat in Rio, with no restaurant, just an iron wood-fired oven mounted on a trailer, driving around the city selling pizzas by the slice to survive. That trailer became five locations across Rio and seven wins for best pizza in the city from local critics.

What sets it apart isn't just the fired-up crust, it's the toppings. They skip the predictable in favor of things like salmon with smoked cheeses and dill. And there's a house rule at play across the whole menu: everything gets touched by the fire, even ingredients you wouldn't expect.

📍 Rua Maria Quitéria, 107

Capricciosa

Ipanema's original DOC-certified pizzeria, Capricciosa has been racking up awards since it opened in 1999, including a current spot on the 50 Top Latin America Pizza list.

📍 Rua Vinícius de Moraes, 134

Best seafood restaurants in Ipanema

Rio is a coastal city through and through, and that shows up on the plate. Good and fresh seafood isn't hard to find here, it's practically expected. Ipanema's two standout spots split the experience into two completely different registers: one polished and traditional, the other casual and citrusy.

Satyricon

Founded nearly 40 years ago and still run by the same family, Satyricon is one of Rio's most established names in high-end Italian-Mediterranean seafood. Right at the entrance, a counter displays the day's catch and oysters before they make it to the kitchen.

The seafood platters are built for sharing, pastas like clam spaghetti are a safe bet, and the newer giant shrimp dishes have become a house favorite. Expect a polished, upscale crowd and a dining room split across a bar, an interior garden, and the main hall.

📍 Rua Barão da Torre, 192

La Carioca Cevicheria

Rio's very first cevicheria, La Carioca opened this Ipanema location in 2013. The concept is Peruvian food filtered through a Carioca lens where ceviche is the obvious specialty, but the menu also covers other fish preparations, hot dishes, craft beer, and sangria. The decor leans Peruvian, but the vibe stays unmistakably Rio: casual, beachy, no pretense.

📍 Rua Garcia d'Ávila, 173, Loja A

Best fine dining in Ipanema

This is the register where Ipanema goes toe-to-toe with any dining capital in the world with two Michelin-starred kitchens, both intimate, both chef-driven, both worth planning a night around.

Oseille

Thomas Troisgros brings his Parisian heritage to Ipanema by way of a tiny 16-seat counter, located into the same townhouse as his more casual neo-bistro, Toto. In an open kitchen run by a small team, it displays seasonal five or seven-course tasting menus leaning on Brazilian ingredients while nodding to French tradition.

The experience feels less like a formal fine-dining experience and more like being cooked for in someone's home. It earned a Michelin star in 2025.

📍 Rua Joana Angélica, 155

Lasai

At just ten seats, dinner at Lasai plays out more like a live performance than a meal. As chef Rafa Costa e Silva and his team work the room, talking guests through a surprise tasting menu built around vegetables grown organically in the chef's own gardens in Itanhangá and Vale das Videiras.

Opening in October on the 21st floor of the new Sofitel Ipanema, a move up from its longtime home in Humaitá, Lasai brings its Michelin-starred tasting menu to the neighborhood with what should be one of the best views in the city to match it.

📍 Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema (opening October)

Best bars in Ipanema

Ipanema's bar scene grew up alongside the neighborhood's own brand of sophisticated informality, the same spirit that made a place like Garota de Ipanema a legend decades ago. Today that same DNA has branched out: alongside the classic botecos, there's now real depth for anyone chasing a well-made cocktail or a serious glass of wine.

Arp

My pick, hands down, for the location alone: right on Arpoador, with both an indoor room and sidewalk tables spilling out toward the water. It's the spot for sunset drinks, but the kitchen works all day too, with breakfast and lunch options alongside the evening menu. The food matches the hotel it's attached to: understated, sophisticated, nothing overdone.

📍 Hotel Arpoador, Rua Francisco Otaviano, 61

Virtuoso

A natural wine bar, Virtuoso keeps a rotating list of over 300 natural, low-intervention labels, mostly Brazilian, with a few South American and European imports mixed in. The vibe is deliberately informal, more listening bar than wine snobbery, with small plates built to share alongside the glass.

📍 Rua Gomes Carneiro, 130

Best Ice cream in Ipanema

Ipanema is home to branches of half the city's classic and up-and-coming sorveterias, so there's no shortage of options. But if you ask me which one to actually go to, there's only one answer.

Itália

This is the one. Skip the bigger names, order the tapioca ice cream, and thank me later.

📍 Rua Visconde de Pirajá, 395

Granado

Worth a mention for the sheer novelty: this is the ice cream shop tucked inside the historic Granado perfumery, where flavors are built to echo the brand's classic fragrances. Beyond the gimmick, it's simply a gorgeous space to duck into for a scoop.

📍 Rua Garcia d'Ávila, 108
