Botafogo has one of the highest concentrations of bars in Rio, and the best bars in Botafogo capture exactly what nightlife here is about: keeping it casual. Think tables spilling onto the sidewalk, petiscos (bar snacks) meant for sharing, and cold beer.
But the neighborhood has also been attracting a newer wave of cocktail bars, for when you want something more creative than a caipirinha. And when the night calls for more energy, there are bars with live music and a dance floor.
Here’s something about how we go out in Rio: a lot of the time, we leave home without a set destination. We have our favorite spots, of course, but some nights we just head out and pick a bar based on the vibe. Botafogo is perfect for that, because its bars are clustered on a few streets, so you can walk from one to the next until something feels right.
Rua Arnaldo Quintela is the best-known of these clusters and one of the busiest, especially since Time Out ranked it among the coolest streets in the world in 2024. But it’s not the only one. Rua Nelson Mandela, right by Botafogo metro station, is packed with laid-back, lively bars. And the area around Rua da Passagem is worth exploring too, with only a handful of bars, but good ones.
In this guide to the best bars in Botafogo, I’m sharing my personal favorites and the spots I recommend to visitors, organized into three categories: bars for sitting down with a drink, bars for live music, and bars for dancing.
Best bars in Botafogo for cold beer
Botica
A two-time award for best bar food in the city, Botica is a classic boteco with a creative twist. The menu changes every week, so check the chalkboard and order a few small plates from the cold counter and pair them with a creamy, well-poured draft beer.
Chanchada
Chanchada has a tiny seven-seat counter decorated with vinyl covers and was Dua Lipa and Rosalia’s favorite spots in Rio. Chef Bruno Katz’s sharing plates go beyond the usual bar snacks, with grilled okra, duck hearts, and crispy pork belly. Order a cold chope or a batida, a sweet cocktail made with cachaça and fruit.
Galeto Sat’s
A Copacabana institution for over 50 years, Galeto Sat’s opened its Botafogo branch in 2016, and it quickly became my favorite. It’s a braseiro, a casual grill house where meat is cooked over charcoal, and I’m a big fan of them (I explain more in my guide to food in Rio de Janeiro). The star here is the galeto (spring chicken) roasted over the coals, but snacks like chicken hearts and garlic bread are just as good with a cold beer.
Malandro
Opened in December 2024, this bar is a tribute to samba, with walls covered in classic album covers and flags printed with song lyrics. The menu mixes tradition and creativity, like feijoada croquettes with orange jam. Feijoada is served every day, and on Saturdays there’s a live roda de samba.
Fala Bar
One of those places where everything on the menu is good, from the pastéis to the sandwiches. Beer drinkers and cocktail lovers are equally covered: try the Bem Amado, a riff on the Jorge Amado, a classic cocktail from Paraty. It’s always packed, so arrive early if you want a table.
Best bars in Botafogo for wine and cocktails
Blue Blazer
A speakeasy with no sign on the door, Blue Blazer is all about cocktails that surprise you. Mixologist Laura Paravato was named professional of the year by Veja Rio in 2025, and her menu plays with Brazilian ingredients, like the Fresh Garden, made with guaraná and açaí cachaça.
Canastra Rosé
This bar sits in a charming old house with a relaxed, intimate feel. The wine list is excellent, and the signature cocktails are worth trying too, like the refreshing Gin Canastra with red fruit notes. Order the warm Camembert or the salmon tartare, and if you’re there at the right time, head up to the terrace, where they fire up a barbecue.
Cave Nacional
If you want to know Brazilian wines, this is the place to go, with hundreds of labels to choose from. The menu suggests a pairing for each dish, like crispy tapioca cubes with a sparkling wine from the South of Brazil.
📍 Rua Dezenove de Fevereiro, 151
Vian Cocktail
One of the most acclaimed cocktail bars in Rio, Vian moved from Ipanema to a restored 1909 mansion in Botafogo. The drinks are created by co-owner Fred Viana, named bartender of the year by Veja Rio. The two-story space has a long bar counter, plus sofas and tables in the back, and a menu of small plates to go with your cocktails.
Best Bars in Botafogo for Live Music
Brewteco
Set on the rooftop of Botafogo Praia Shopping, Brewteco has one of the best views of any bar in the neighborhood, looking out over Botafogo Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. I recommend it for the samba nights on Thursdays, and from Friday to Sunday there’s a DJ.
📍 Botafogo Praia Shopping, rooftop terrace
Escuta
Listening bars have taken off in Rio, and Escuta is the one I recommend, set at a three-story house. On the ground floor, you can pick albums from the record collection, while the second floor has a listening room with a DJ booth, weekly jazz nights, and records to listen to or buy.
Best Bars in Botafogo for Dancing
Quartinho
.Quartinho is one of the liveliest bars on Rua Arnaldo Quintela, and on Thursdays and Saturdays the room turns into a dance floor. Try the creative cocktails, like the Matchá ou Morrer, made with matcha-infused soju.
Vuvu
Vuvu mixes food, drinks and a lot of music. The lineup changes depending on the night, from DJ sets to forró, a dance style from the Northeast of Brazil, so check their Instagram before you go.
