Ipanema is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most sought-after neighborhoods, and not just for tourists. It has a long stretch of sand between the Arpoador rock and Leblon, tree-lined walkable streets and the Lagoa lagoon just a few blocks behind.
Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, is the neighborhood I recommend to anyone who wants the beach at the center of the trip, with a calmer, more upscale base than Copacabana.
Lonely Planet ranked Ipanema the world’s second-best beach, Arpoador is the city’s most famous sunset spot, and some of Rio’s best restaurants and hotels fit into this compact area.
This guide covers where Ipanema is, how to get there, the beach itself, and links to everything else I’ve written about it: where to stay, what to do, how is Carnival there and where to eat.
Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro at a glance
🏖️ Great for: beach lovers, couples, LGBTQ+, sunsets, a walkable base
🌆 Vibe: relaxed, stylish, residential, beach life all day long
🚇 Getting around: metro stations at both ends, flat and easy to walk
💰 Budget: mid-range to luxury, pricier than Copacabana
Where is Ipanema and how to get there
Ipanema sits in Rio’s South Zone, between Copacabana and Leblon, with the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas behind it. The Arpoador rock marks its border with Copacabana, and the Jardim de Alah canal separates it from Leblon. The neighborhood is compact and flat, so you can walk from one end to the other in about half an hour.
From Galeão International Airport, Ipanema is about 25 km away, usually 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter by taxi or Uber depending on traffic. I cover the options in my guide on how to get from the airport.
The metro makes Ipanema easy to reach from the rest of the city. General Osório station is at the Arpoador end and Nossa Senhora da Paz is in the middle. For more, check my guide to getting around Rio.
Where to stay in Ipanema
Ipanema is one of the best places to stay in Rio, though prices are higher than in Copacabana. Where you stay within the neighborhood matters: Arpoador puts you closest to the sunset spot and Copacabana, but it’s also the busiest section. Central Ipanema is lively, and the blocks near the Lagoa are quieter and more residential.
Quick pick: Best hotels in Ipanema
Hotel Arpoador
My favorite: no frills, right on the Arpoador corner, with ocean views.
Ipanema Inn
Charming small hotel close to the metro station and the beach.
Sofitel Ipanema
Sofitel’s first flagship in Brazil, newly reopened right on the beach.
My where to stay in Ipanema guide breaks down each area of the neighborhood, and my list of the best hotels in Ipanema has my picks for every budget, from luxury to hostels.
Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro
Ipanema Beach is about 2 km of sand, from the Arpoador rock to the Jardim de Alah canal, where Leblon Beach begins. Like Copacabana, it’s divided into lifeguard posts, and each one has its own crowd.
Arpoador and Posto 7
The Arpoador end is the most dramatic part of the beach, with the rock jutting into the ocean and surfers in the water most of the day. It’s also Rio’s most famous sunset spot: on clear days, the crowd on the rock applauds when the sun goes down behind Two Brothers. Arrive early if you want a good place on the rock. For more details, see my guide to the best sunset spots in Rio.
On the other side of the Arpoador rock is Diabo Beach, a tiny cove most tourists skip. It often looks calm on sunny days, but the waves can be very strong, so check the lifeguard flags before going in. It’s one of the hidden beaches in Rio I cover in a separate guide.
Posto 8 and Posto 9
Posto 8, in front of Rua Farme de Amoedo, is the beach’s LGBTQ+ meeting point, marked by the rainbow flag. Posto 9 is the most famous stretch of Ipanema, young, social and busy, especially on weekends.
Posto 10 and the Leblon end
Toward Leblon, the beach gets calmer, with more volleyball and families.
Practical tips for Ipanema Beach
The water is colder and rougher than many visitors expect, with strong currents on some days, so always swim near a lifeguard post. Beach vendors rent chairs and umbrellas and sell everything from mate to Globo biscuits.
Bring only what you need to the sand: a phone, a little cash and a towel, and don’t leave your things unattended when you go into the water. In Rio, it’s normal to ask the people next to you to keep an eye on your stuff. I usually sit near women or families so I can ask them.
Not sure what to wear to the beach? My guide on what to wear in Rio de Janeiro covers it, and my Rio packing list has everything else to bring.
Things to do in Ipanema
Beyond the beach, Ipanema’s best moments happen around it: sunrise at Arpoador, a workout at Diabo Beach’s public gym, an afternoon around the Lagoa, the Sunday Feira Hippie at General Osório Square, and samba at night with Samba do Orelhão. I put it all together as a full day in my guide to what to do in Ipanema.
Where to eat in Ipanema
Ipanema has one of the best food scenes in Rio, from classic botecos and juice bars to restaurants that deserve a reservation. My guide to the best restaurants in Ipanema has my picks by category. For mornings, a few of my favorite spots are in my breakfast and brunch guide.
Carnival in Ipanema
Ipanema is one of the best bases for Rio Carnival if you want the party without the chaos. The neighborhood has its own street blocos, including traditional ones like Banda de Ipanema, but they’re generally smaller and more family-friendly than the Downtown mega-blocos.
It’s a good choice if you want a calmer Carnival experience, with the beach a few blocks away for the mornings after.
My street blocos guide explains how they work, and my guide on where to stay in Rio during Carnival compares Ipanema with the other neighborhoods.
Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro - FAQ
Is Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro?
Yes. Ipanema is a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, between Copacabana and Leblon, about 10 km from Downtown and 25 km from Galeão International Airport.
Is Ipanema or Copacabana better?
Ipanema is calmer, more upscale and has better restaurants within walking distance. Copacabana is cheaper, more central and buzzier, and it hosts the big events. My guide to Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro can help you compare.

Its beach, its sunsets at Arpoador and, above all, “The Girl from Ipanema,” the bossa nova song written in 1962 by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. The bar where they used to watch the girl walk by still exists, now called Garota de Ipanema.
Is Ipanema expensive?
It’s one of Rio’s pricier neighborhoods, especially for hotels, but street food, juice bars and botecos keep everyday eating affordable. For more, see my guide to Rio de Janeiro on a budget.
