But Ipanema is more than a place to sleep. Even if you're not staying here, you can spend a full day soaking up its best moments. This guide is a one-day itinerary to what to do in Ipanema, from sunrise to dinner, for anyone who wants their own day as the Girl from Ipanema.

Morning: Sunrise, breakfast and beach
If you're up for an early morning, here's where you should start your day. Arpoador is world-famous for its sunset, but few know it's just as good for sunrise. Tucked behind the rocks, a small beach that most visitors walk right past faces Copacabana's waters, exactly where the sun comes up.
Expect a calm start to the day, as this isn't a popular sunrise spot. This is Diabo Beach, and it's where locals come to exercise — there's a public outdoor gym built right on the sidewalk, worth a look even if you're just passing through.

Keep walking into Ipanema Beach proper, home to Brazil's first outdoor bike studio if you prefer to cycle. Visiting between November and March? Every summer, a project turns this stretch into an open-air workout spot right on the sand.
For breakfast: if hunger strikes while you're still around Arpoador, no need to go far. Arp Bar serves breakfast at beachfront tables from 7 to 11am. To stay at the beachfront, a few kiosks also do breakfast, like Sel D'Ipanema and Clássico Beach Club. The rest of the morning is beach time. My favorite window is before the sun gets too strong and the sand fills up. Find a spot, order a coconut water, and settle in; this is Ipanema at its most unhurried. Midday: Lunch in Ipanema
Ipanema has excellent restaurants for both Brazilian and international food. I'll always point you toward the Brazilian side and the neighborhood covers everything from churrascarias and feijoada to juice houses for a quick, healthy bite. Afternoon: Lagoon, shopping, sunset and samba
How you spend the afternoon depends on what kind of day you're after.
If it's Sunday, start at Ipanema Hippie fair, on General Osório square, one of Rio's most beloved outdoor markets, with handmade jewelry, art, clothing, and local food.
For something slower, head to Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, a few blocks from the beach. It's a completely different pace: rent a bike or a pedal boat, stop for açaí at one of the kiosks, or just walk the path around the water with Christ the Redeemer as a backdrop.
If shopping is more your speed, Ipanema got you covered, with a few stores worth visiting specifically. The Havaianas flagship on Rua Vinícius de Moraes has the full collection, and Granado, the historic Brazilian pharmacy brand, has a beautiful store worth a stop even if you're not buying.

If you're there on a Thursday or Saturday, stick around a bit longer: that's when Samba do Orelhão takes over the Alaalaô kiosk, right on the sand, timed with the sunset.
