This is by far the most iconic sunset in Rio de Janeiro, with the sun disappearing behind the mountains. Arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset to enjoy the golden hour from the summit, then stay after dusk as the city lights come on below you.

📍 Av. Pasteur, 520 — Urca. Easiest to get there by Uber or taxi.
🎟️ Regular ticket: R$170 per person (round trip). Fast-pass ticket: R$260, worth it at sunset, when the return queue can stretch to 500+ people.

This is probably the sunset you've seen in photos of Rio de Janeiro. It's the most famous, and undeniably beautiful. And it comes with a ritual: as the sun dips into the ocean, we applaud. It’s a collective pause to say thanks for the beauty of another day by the sea, and for the simple privilege of being here.
Arrive early to claim a spot on or near Arpoador Rock, especially in summer when the beach fills up fast. Bring a cold beer or a coconut water, let the golden hour wash over you, and when the last sliver of sun disappears behind the mountains, clap. You'll fit right in.

🏄 Best beach sunset for the southwest side
A pier that stretches out over the water, with Pedra da Gávea and Tijuca Forest rising to your left and the sun dropping straight into the sea on your right. It's one of those spots that feels completely different from the rest of Rio's sunset scene.
Where Arpoador is electric and social, sunset at Quebra Mar is relaxed and local, with families, people on bikes, surfers wrapping up their day. No crowds, no ritual, no applause. Just a genuinely beautiful view and the easy energy of a neighborhood at the end of a good day.

🌅 Most underrated sunset spot
Most visitors go up in the morning and that's exactly why sunset is my favourite time to go. As the last vans depart about an hour before the final train, the platform gradually empties and what you're left with is one of the most quietly sunset in Rio de Janeiro.

In a city surrounded by water, there's something special about watching the sunset from it, and that's why I recommend this sunset in Rio de Janeiro for special occasions. From the bay, you get to see the whole city at once, with the mountains and Christ the Redeemer framed against a sky that shifts from gold to deep tropical blue.
Shared and private tours depart in the late afternoon and usually last two to three hours, covering golden hour and early dusk.

Just find a spot on the wall, feel the breeze coming off Guanabara Bay, and watch the sun set framed by Christ the Redeemer. That's it, simple, effortless, and somehow, it's one of the most enchanting sunset moments in Rio de Janeiro.
The Mureta da Urca is where we go when we don't want a plan. Just grab a cold beer or a caipirinha (kai-pur-e-en-ya — cachaça, fresh lime, sugar, perfection) from one of the vendors, sit on the wall, and let the evening happen around you. Sugarloaf rises behind you and the bay stretches ahead. Simple. Local. Pure Rio.

Sunset at Museum of Tomorrow + Pedra do Sal
This is the spot to combine sunset with culture. Visit the Museum of Tomorrow in the afternoon, then wait for the sunset over the harbor. Casa do Saulo restaurant is a great spot for it.
For the rest of the evening, you have two options: samba at Pedra do Sal, or Belmonte, one of Rio's most loved bars.

Best sunset views in Niterói (Across the bay from Rio)
For those willing to go a little further and who have already seen Rio's classics.
Niterói is best saved for a second visit, or for travelers with extra time who want to experience something most tourists never do: watching Rio's skyline glow at sunset from across the bay. The view is stunning precisely because the city becomes the backdrop.
Getting there: Take the ferry from Praça XV in downtown Rio. It's a 20-minute crossing and part of the experience and you avoid driving. The traffic on the bridge can turn a simple trip into a frustrating one.
Parque da Cidade

High above the cliffs, this viewpoint offers one of the best panoramic views of Rio's skyline you'll ever see and a front-row seat for paragliders launching into the air. Plan at least half a day to make the crossing worthwhile.
Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (MAC)
Oscar Niemeyer's iconic flying saucer building is a sight in itself. The views of Guanabara Bay and Rio's skyline from the surrounding area are beautiful at golden hour and the ferry ride back to Rio as the city lights up is the perfect ending.
