For a long time, Rio de Janeiro sunrise felt like a well-kept secret. While the city is famous for its sunsets, places like Mirante Dona Marta quietly became known among early risers who wanted to see Rio before it fully wakes.

Sunrise at Copacabana Beach
🌅 Most iconic sunrise in Rio
It is hard to think of Rio without picturing the sweeping crescent of Copacabana Beach. Yet surprisingly, many visitors overlook it as a sunrise destination. For locals, this is where the Rio sunrise truly begins, with joggers and cyclists filling the promenade as the first rays of light hit the ocean.

For a safe experience, try staying as close to the beachfront as possible. This allows you to step directly onto the sand instead of moving through quieter streets before dawn. Before heading out, take a moment to observe the movement around you and avoid carrying valuables you do not need.

Sunrise at Urca, Red beach

Praia Vermelha (Red Beach), located in the Urca neighborhood, offers a peaceful and safe sunrise experience, framed by the Sugarloaf without the intensity of larger beaches.
It feels less like a tourist stop and more like part of a real Rio morning routine. Locals walk dogs, swim, or paddleboard as dawn breaks over Guanabara Bay, creating a calm and residential atmosphere.
Urca is widely considered one of the safest areas in Rio due to its military presence and quiet neighborhood dynamic, making this beach an excellent choice for travelers who want a serene and comfortable sunrise setting. Urca is also a good area to stay if you are looking for places beyond the classics.

With restricted tickets available, early birds are welcomed at Morro da Urca before continuing to the summit for one of the most exclusive sunrise views in Rio de Janeiro, followed by breakfast. Watching the first light spread across Copacabana, Guanabara Bay, and downtown Rio while enjoying breakfast above the city creates a completely different atmosphere from the usual daytime visit. It is a unique way to experience one of Rio’s most iconic landmarks without the crowds.

Because of its dramatic perspective, it is also one of the most popular places to watch the sunrise. Photographers, small groups, and early-morning visitors often gather here, creating a lively atmosphere rather than an isolated one.
Although it is possible to arrive by Uber, finding a car for the return trip can be difficult once you are at the viewpoint. Many travelers choose to join a guided sunrise tour or arrange the return in advance with a driver. Some taxi drivers also offer round-trip arrangements, which can make the experience smoother.
Sunrise at Vista Chinesa
Also located inside the Tijuca Forest, Vista Chinesa offers a quieter sunrise surrounded by nature. The Chinese-style gazebo, built as a tribute to the Chinese immigrants who introduced tea cultivation to Brazil in the 19th century, frames sweeping views of the coastline and Christ the Redeemer.
Unlike Dona Marta, mornings here are typically shared with cyclists and a handful of early risers rather than large tour groups. The atmosphere feels calm, immersive, and deeply connected to the surrounding forest.
While Uber can drop you off near the viewpoint, arranging your return ahead of time is highly recommended, as finding a vehicle in the area early in the morning can be challenging. Joining a tour or coordinating a round-trip with a driver or taxi is often the easiest option.
Sunrise hike to Dois Irmãos (Vidigal)
For travelers seeking adventure, the sunrise hike to Morro Dois Irmãos delivers a spectacular panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro. Rising above the Vidigal neighborhood, these twin peaks form the iconic backdrop seen from Ipanema Beach, a silhouette that many visitors recognize long before they learn its name. From the summit, the perspective shifts completely, revealing beaches, lagoons, and the city’s skyline slowly illuminated by soft morning light.
The trail is relatively short but steep, and a guide is highly recommended, especially because the hike usually begins in the dark before sunrise. Going with someone who knows the route and carries proper equipment, such as a headlamp or flashlight, makes the experience safer and more comfortable.
Important context: The trail begins inside Vidigal, a favela community at the foot of Dois Irmãos. While Vidigal is not dominated by drug trafficking like some other communities in Rio, it is still a space where police operations can occur without prior notice, as recent events have shown, leaving visitors stranded on the trail and unable to descend safely.
Reaching the trailhead also requires riding a mototaxi through the favela in the early hours of the morning, well before sunrise. This is part of the experience many travelers embrace, but it's something to factor into your decision.
The panoramic view is beautiful and worth seeing, though Rio offers other equally stunning mirantes with a more predictable experience. Consider your comfort level before committing.
Is it safe to watch Rio de Janeiro sunrise?
Sunrise in Rio often feels calmer than sunset, but each location has its own rhythm. Beaches like Copacabana and Praia Vermelha usually have visible early-morning activity from locals exercising or enjoying the ocean, which helps create a comfortable environment.
In Copacabana, minimizing movement through empty streets is key. Staying near the beachfront allows you to reach the sand quickly, where there is more visibility and movement. In Urca, the residential environment and military presence make Praia Vermelha one of the easiest places to enjoy sunrise with peace of mind.
Forest viewpoints require a bit more planning. Mirante Dona Marta tends to be lively thanks to photographers and small groups, while Vista Chinesa offers a quieter setting often shared with cyclists. Traveling light, observing the surroundings, and planning your transportation ahead of time can make sunrise experiences smoother and more enjoyable.
