Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro: Where to Stay, What to Do, Eat and Drink

Botafogo rarely makes the first list of neighborhoods visitors plan around, and that’s exactly what I like about it. It’s where I’ve spent most of my life in Rio, and it’s the neighborhood that best shows how people here actually live: busy streets lined with old houses, cafés and bars full of locals, and one of the most famous views in the city, with Sugarloaf Mountain rising over the bay.

For travelers, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, is one of the most practical bases in the city. It sits between Downtown and the beaches of the South Zone, with one metro station that puts Copacabana, Ipanema and Downtown a short ride away. Prices for hotels, rentals and meals also tend to be lower than in the beach neighborhoods.

The catch is the beach itself. Botafogo faces Guanabara Bay, and its water isn’t recommended for swimming. The good news is that Urca, right next door, solves that problem with one of my favorite beaches in the city: Praia Vermelha, a small, sheltered beach at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain.

This guide covers everything you need to decide if Botafogo is the right base for you: where it is, how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and where to eat and drink.

Where is Botafogo and how to get there

Botafogo sits between Flamengo and Copacabana, on the curve of Botafogo Bay, with Urca and Sugarloaf Mountain on one side and Humaitá and the Lagoon on the other.

From Galeão International Airport, Botafogo is usually 30 minutes by taxi or Uber, depending on traffic. From Santos Dumont airport, it’s 15 minutes. I cover the options in my guide on how to get from the airport.

Botafogo has one metro station, named Botafogo and serving Lines 1 or 2, connecting the neighborhood to Copacabana, Ipanema, Downtown and Maracanã Stadium. For more, check my guide to getting around Rio.

Botafogo Beach and the Sugarloaf view

What puts Botafogo on most visitors’ maps is Botafogo Beach, a curve of sand on Guanabara Bay with Sugarloaf Mountain rising behind it. It’s one of the most famous views in Rio, the one you’ve probably seen on postcards before you even knew the neighborhood’s name. Unfortunately, the water isn’t safe for swimming.

That shouldn’t keep you away. The beach is the start of Parque do Flamengo, a long waterfront park with a bike path that’s lovely for walking, cycling and taking in the view at your own pace. For the same postcard from above, head to the rooftop of Botafogo Praia Shopping, where Spesso, one of my favorite cafés in Botafogo, looks straight at Sugarloaf.

Since 2025, the bay gets even more special at the end of the year, when a floating Christmas tree lights up the water. I share the dates and the best spots to see it in my guide to Rio de Janeiro in December.

Where to stay in Botafogo

Botafogo is compact and walkable, and most hotels are in two areas: along Praia de Botafogo, the bayfront avenue, just steps from the waterfront and the Sugarloaf view, or around Voluntários da Pátria, the neighborhood’s main street, close to the best bars and nightlife.

My guide on where to stay in Botafogo breaks it down area by area, with hotel picks for every budget.

Things to do in Botafogo

Don’t let Botafogo’s small size fool you into thinking there’s nothing to do. Between museums, historic gardens and hidden viewpoints, it has more than enough to fill a full day. There’s even a statue of Michael Jackson, in Santa Marta, the community where he filmed the video for “They Don’t Care About Us.” I put it all together in my guide to things to do in Botafogo.

Where to eat and drink in Botafogo

Botafogo has one of the most exciting food and bar scenes in Rio, and it’s mostly made for locals. For mornings, my guide to the best breakfast and cafés in Botafogo has my 9 favorites. For nights out, see my picks for the best bars in Botafogo.
