Astoria Palace: Staying at the Cheapest Beachfront Hotel in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro

Copacabana is a natural choice when planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro, especially for first-timers. Home to Brazil's most famous beach and close to the city's main attractions, it's convenient and practical. And if you're here for the beach, the closer you stay to the sand, the better.

In several posts on this blog, I recommend choosing a beachfront hotel in Copacabana, especially if you're visiting during New Year's Eve or Pride. The catch is that beachfront hotels tend to be the most expensive option in the neighborhood, with some going for up to $900 a night.

But Copacabana is democratic enough to have something for every budget, even on its priciest street. For a little over $100 a night, you can still stay beachfront. And to find out if the cheapest beachfront hotel in Copacabana is actually worth it, I stayed there myself. Here’s my experience.

Booking Copacabana's Cheapest Beachfront Hotel

I stayed one night on January 18, 2026, peak summer season in Rio, and paid $109 for a Superior Deluxe Double Room with Ocean View, with breakfast included, booked for one person.

I reserved the room just one day in advance, and chose this hotel for the value it offered relative to its location. On the same date, hotels off Avenida Atlântica, without ocean views, were actually more expensive.

Checking the same dates for next year, the room is now listed at $157, up from the $109 I paid. Booking last-minute likely helped, but even at the higher price, this is still the cheapest beachfront hotel available for those dates.

What It's Like to Stay at a Beachfront Hotel in Copacabana

In Copacabana, no hotel sits right on the sand, they all line Avenida Atlântica, and you need to cross the avenue to reach the beach. Some hotels offer beach service with tents and chairs, but Astoria Palace doesn't. That's not really an issue, since renting one on the beach itself is cheap.

Being beachfront also means being close to the buzz of the boardwalk, and you can watch the sunset from the comfort and safety of your hotel, if street safety is a concern. And if you're visiting for one of the concerts on Copacabana Beach, the location is excellent, it's very close to the main stage, right by Copacabana Palace.

The Room

I stayed in a Superior Deluxe Double Room with Ocean View. I had a frontal ocean view and despite being on a low floor, nothing blocked it. Soundproofing was excellent, with the window closed, it was completely silent.

The room was spacious, with a large, comfortable bed, a work desk, and a dining table, plus tile floors. Amenities included a kettle and a minibar. Excellent blackout curtains if you want to actually sleep in.

The bathroom was large, with a bathtub and a double sink.

I'm not a room-review expert, and I'm generally an easygoing guest as long as it's clean and comfortable. By my own standards, the room delivered, and considering the price and the location, it was worth it.

Astoria Palace: Hotel Structure

Astoria Palace is a relatively small hotel, with a small but colorful and beautiful lobby. The rooftop has two small pools and a bar with a full view of the Copacabana coastline.

The rooftop is the hotel's strongest feature, but it comes with one downside: it doesn't open until 8 AM, so you can't watch the full sunrise from up there. You can catch it from the bar area, but through glass. For more sunrise spots in Rio, check out this guide.

Breakfast is served buffet-style at the hotel's ground-floor restaurant, with a good variety of hot and cold dishes, including regional specialties. I found it honest, not exceptional, but it does the job well.

The hotel also has a gym, which I didn't use.

It would be a perfect spot for sunset if it was open. The good thing is that you can just cross the street.

Hotel Location in the Neighborhood

Astoria Palace sits at Posto 2, a block from Copacabana Palace, right in the heart of Copacabana. It's close to excellent restaurants like Churrascaria Palace, near Blue Note for jazz and bossa nova nights, and about 600 meters from Cardeal Arcoverde metro station.

This location happens to be one of the best in the neighborhood for events, too. For New Year's Eve and Copacabana Beach concerts, the stage and fireworks go up right in front of Copacabana Palace, so you're a short walk from the action. So, Was Staying at Copacabana's Cheapest Beachfront Hotel Worth It?

Yes. The hotel won't impress anyone looking for modern design or the latest amenities, that's part of why it's the cheapest option on the beachfront.

But given the location, the view from my room, and the overall comfort, structure, and staff friendliness, I'd recommend it to tourists looking for a budget option, whether first-timers or not. I especially vouch for it if you're visiting for events like New Year's Eve, Carnival, or the Copacabana Beach concerts, thanks to its central location.
