Day use in Rio de Janeiro: The best hotels to indulge for a few hours

A day use in Rio de Janeiro is how you indulge in a five-star pool and view, even if just for a few hours. Photo by Filo.

Rio de Janeiro isn't the kind of destination that demands an endless checklist of museums and landmarks. Stay more than five days, which I recommend, and you can cover its history, nature, and icons and still have time left to spare.

That time is best spent on a Michelin-starred dinner, a boat trip, or, my favorite, a hotel day use in Rio de Janeiro: an afternoon at a five-star pool, a drink in hand, someone else taking care of you for a few hours. Call it a vacation within the vacation.

This option comes in handy if you're staying in a budget accommodation or an Airbnb, which many travelers in Rio de Janeiro do. Vacation rentals are great for space and budget, but they don't come with the kind of treatment you'd only get as a guest at one of Rio's five-star hotels.

Day use in Rio de Janeiro is how you get a taste of that without paying for a full night: for a fraction of the room rate, some of the city's best hotels open their doors, their pools, and sometimes their spas for a few hours.

Beachfront day use in Rio de Janeiro

If your budget didn't fit a beachfront stay in Copacabana, you still have a shot at that view and that pool, for a few hours. Here are the beachfront hotels that open their doors for day use.

Hilton Copacabana

Hilton's day use package gets you access to an apartment from 3 PM to 8 PM, plus the hotel's common areas from 10 AM to 8 PM. It comes with a 20% discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks.
Book directly with the hotel to check current rates and availability.

Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana

The Fairmont occasionally offers limited day-use or day-spa packages, though the hotel's main infinity pool is usually reserved for overnight guests. Availability isn't guaranteed, so this one's worth a direct call to the hotel to see what's currently on offer.

Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort

Beyond Copacabana, the Sheraton is one of Rio's only beachfront hotels with direct access to the beach (most oceanfront hotels in the city sit across the avenue). Its day use rate covers the leisure areas, fitness center, along with discounts on food, drinks, Spa treatments, and tennis court rentals.

Day use hotels at Barra da Tijuca

Barra da Tijuca's day use hotels work two ways. If you're staying in the area, in an Airbnb or a more modest hotel, it's how you get a taste of the neighborhood's best properties without changing where you sleep.

And if you spend a morning at Grumari, Prainha, or one of Rio's wilder and hidden beaches further west, it's the perfect way to end the day: a shower, a pool, and some comfort before heading back into the city.

Grand Hyatt

The Grand Hyatt sits oceanfront with direct access to Praia da Reserva, one of the few stretches of Rio's coastline with no buildings behind the sand. Its pool day use package are also available on weekends and holidays, and can be paired with spa treatments or dining. I've done it a couple of times myself, and the combo of spa and beach service is worth the price.

Hilton Barra

Hilton Barra's day use package includes access to the common areas, including the pool and gym, plus discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks, with the apartment available from 10 AM to 5 PM. It's one of the few day use packages in Rio that's genuinely family-friendly: up to two kids under 12 stay free with their parents, and pets are welcome for an additional fee.

CDesign Hotel

A short drive further out in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, CDesign is Rio's first design hotel, and its Day Use with Accommodation package gives you a full day with the infinity pool, spa, gym, and lounge. Check-in is at 10 AM and check-out at 6 PM, weekdays only.

Unique day use experiences in Rio de Janeiro

Not every day use has to be in the middle of the action. These two properties trade proximity to Rio's busiest, most famous areas for a quieter, more secluded setting, without giving up incredible views.

La Suite by Dussol

Tucked away in Joatinga, one of Rio's most secluded corners, La Suite's day use package includes a welcome drink, a three-course lunch, and full access to both pools, including an infinity one overlooking the coastline. It’s also available on weekends and holidays, from 9 AM to 6 PM. Book directly through the hotel's site or WhatsApp.

Hotel Santa Teresa MGallery

Perched in the hills of Santa Teresa, this hotel's day use package is built around a six-hour escape: a welcome drink, a three-course lunch, and access to the pool and garden from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro

For something younger and more design-forward, Yoo2's day use package includes a support room and access to the rooftop pool with a view of Sugarloaf Mountain. It runs from 10 AM to 6 PM.

More ways to indulge in Rio de Janeiro

If a few hours weren't enough and you're thinking about staying the night, Rio's best luxury hotels cover everything from the icons everyone knows to the quieter boutique addresses.

And if you want to keep the indulgence going beyond the hotel, from a Michelin-starred dinner to a private yacht tour, my guide to Rio's best luxury experiences and restaurants is the natural next stop.
