Where to watch the sunset in Rio de Janeiro?

Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar)

🏆 Best panoramic sunset
Take the cable car or hike the trail for postcard-perfect 360° views of Rio and its coastline. Arrive early — it gets busy, and stick around after dusk to enjoy the city lights. On weekends, there’s often live music — from bossa nova to samba — creating the perfect sunset soundtrack.

Arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset. Spend golden hour at the summit and come back down after dusk, when the city lights up below you — one of the most beautiful views in Rio.

Practical info:

  • 📍 Av. Pasteur, 520 — Urca (closest beach: Praia Vermelha)

  • 🚗 Easiest to get there by Uber or taxi.

  • 🕐 Cable car last boarding is around 7:50pm — check the official website before your visit as times may vary

  • 🎟️ Regular ticket: R$170 per person (round trip). Fast-pass ticket: R$260 — worth it at sunset, when the return queue can stretch to 500+ people

  • 📅 Book in advance — sunset slots sell out weeks ahead on weekends and during high season. You can buy tickets on the official Bondinho website or through GetYourGuide

Arpoador / Ipanema Beach

🌅 Best beach sunset
Rio’s most famous sunset, a moment that happens every evening at Arpoador Rock that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

As the sun dips behind the Dois Irmãos mountains, strangers on the beach stop what they're doing — and applaud. Not for a performance, not for a show. Just for the sky.

It's Rio's moment of gratitude. A collective pause to say thank you for the spectacle of the sun, for the beauty of another day by the sea, for the simple privilege of being here. Locals call it our ritual, and once you experience it, you'll understand why.

Arrive early to claim a spot on or near Arpoador Rock, especially in summer when the beach fills up fast. Bring a cold beer or a coconut water, let the golden hour wash over you, and when the last sliver of sun disappears behind the mountains — clap. You'll fit right in.

Christ the Redeemer

🌅 Most underrated sunset spot
Most visitors go in the morning. That's exactly why sunset is my favourite time to go.

As the last vans depart about an hour before the final train, the platform gradually empties — and what you're left with is one of the most quietly magical moments in Rio. The sun sets over the ocean, dipping behind Dois Irmãos. The city begins to light up below you. Guanabara Bay turns golden, then deep blue. And you're watching all of it with almost nobody around.

It's the Christ the Redeemer that most tourists never see.

Practical info:

  • 🎟️ You must go by official train to enjoy the last hour. Book your ticket at the official Trem do Corcovado website (trainsdocorcovado.rio) or through GetYourGuide

  • 🕐 Opening hours vary during the year. Confirm the last train departure time before your visit

  • 📅 No need to book weeks ahead — train tickets rarely sell out. A good strategy is to keep an eye on the weather a few days before and choose a clear day. Sunset at the Christ on a cloudy day is a very different experience. → How Rio's weather actually works — and why it changes your planning

  • 💡 The return train trip has no fixed reservation, so you can come back on any train after your visit. If you want to arrive earlier and soak in the golden hour from the start, book an earlier slot and simply take the last train down. That final hour on the platform, after the vans are gone and the city begins to glow, is worth staying for.

Sunset boat cruise in Guanabara Bay

💛 Most romantic sunset
Rio is a city surrounded by water — and there's something special about watching it from the water itself.

From the bay, you get a view of Rio that most visitors never see: the whole city at once, with Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer framed against a sky that shifts from gold to deep tropical blue. It's the same perspective that arriving sailors have had for centuries — and it still stops you in your breath.

Shared and private tours depart in the late afternoon and usually last two to three hours, covering golden hour and early dusk. No crowds, no rush — just the city glowing on the water around you.

Mureta da Urca

🍹 Best local vibes
Just find a spot on the wall, feel the breeze coming off Guanabara Bay, and watch the sky change colors. That's it. That's the whole experience — and somehow, it's one of the most enchanting sunset moments in Rio.

The Mureta da Urca is where locals go when they don't want a plan. Grab a cold beer or a caipirinha (kai-pur-e-en-ya — cachaça, fresh lime, sugar, perfection) from one of the vendors, sit on the wall, and let the evening happen around you. Sugarloaf rises behind you. The bay stretches ahead. The city hums in the distance.

Simple. Local. Completely Rio.

Practical info:

  • 🎫 Free to visit — no tickets needed

  • 🚗 Easiest by Uber. A short ride from Botafogo or Flamengo

  • 📍 Best spot is at the beginning of Portugal Avenue. If using a ride-app, ask to be dropped off at Crepes Pascal.

  • 🍺 Vendors sell drinks and snacks directly on the wall — bring cash

Quebra Mar — Barra da Tijuca

🏄 Best sunset for the southwest side
A pier that stretches out over the water, with Pedra da Gávea and the Atlantic Forest rising to your left and the sun dropping straight into the sea on your right. It's one of those spots that feels completely different from the rest of Rio's sunset scene.

Where Arpoador is electric and social, Quebra Mar is relaxed and local — families, people on bikes, surfers wrapping up their day. No crowds, no ritual, no applause. Just a genuinely beautiful view and the easy energy of a neighborhood at the end of a good day.

Practical info:

  • 📍 Beginning of Praia do Pepê, Barra da Tijuca — next to the canal

  • 🚗 Best reached by Uber or a short walk from Jardim Oceânico metro station. Ideal if you're staying in Barra or Recreio

  • 🆓 Free to visit — no tickets needed

Museum of Tomorrow, Pedra do Sal and/or Belmonte

This one is for the curious traveler who wants more than a view.

Start your evening at the Museum of Tomorrow in Praça Mauá — the harbor views at golden hour are beautiful and the architecture alone is worth the walk. Then head to Pedra do Sal, a historic area in the port neighborhood where, on Monday nights, one of Rio's most authentic samba street parties takes over the streets.

Fair warning: it's intense, it's loud, and it's wonderfully chaotic. This is not a polished tourist show — it's a real neighborhood celebration, and that's exactly what makes it special.

Not into samba? Right next door, Belmonte — Rio's most beloved boteco — recently opened at the historic Edifício Touring. A cold chopp with harbor views is a pretty great alternative.

Everything you need to know before going to Pedra do Sal

Best sunset views in Niterói (Across the bay from Rio)

For those willing to go a little further — and who have already seen Rio's classics.

Niterói is best saved for a second visit, or for travelers with extra time who want to experience something most tourists never do: watching Rio's skyline glow at sunset from across the bay. The view is stunning precisely because the city becomes the backdrop.

Getting there: Take the ferry from Praça XV in downtown Rio — it's a 20-minute crossing and part of the experience. Avoid driving, the traffic on the bridge can turn a simple trip into a frustrating one.

Parque da Cidade

🏆 Best panoramic sunset
High above the cliffs, this viewpoint offers one of the best panoramic views of Rio's skyline you'll ever see — and a front-row seat for paragliders launching into the air. Plan at least half a day to make the crossing worthwhile.

Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (MAC)

Oscar Niemeyer's iconic flying saucer building is a sight in itself. The views of Guanabara Bay and Rio's skyline from the surrounding area are beautiful at golden hour — and the ferry ride back to Rio as the city lights up is the perfect ending.

What time does the sun set in Rio de Janeiro?

Sunset times vary slightly throughout the year:

  • Summer (Dec–Mar): around 6:30–7:30 PM

Winter sunsets in Rio are often clearer and more dramatic due to lower humidity — making June and July surprisingly great months for photography.
