Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro for New Year's Eve: Copacabana & the best alternatives
New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro is celebrated on the beaches, with Brazilians dressed in white to welcome the new year with live music, fireworks, and one of the country's most beloved traditions.
Across Rio, you'll find fireworks in Barra da Tijuca, Flamengo, Recreio, Ilha do Governador, and other neighborhoods, each with its own atmosphere and mostly attracting local crowds. But one celebration stands above all the others.
Copacabana hosts one of the largest New Year's Eve parties in the world, drawing millions of people to the beach for a spectacular fireworks display and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else. If it's your first New Year's Eve in Rio, this is the celebration I recommend experiencing at least once.
In this guide, I'll explain where to stay in Rio de Janeiro for New Year’s Eve based on your travel style, and why staying in the right location can completely change your experience.

Quick answer
Short on time? Here's my recommendation on the best area to stay for New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro.
🏆 Copacabana is the best place to stay if it's your first New Year's Eve in Rio. You'll be within walking distance of the city's biggest celebration and avoid the transportation challenges that come with moving around after the fireworks.
🌊 Ipanema is a good alternative if you want a slightly quieter atmosphere while still being close enough to walk to Copacabana.
🍽️ Leblon is ideal for travelers looking for luxury hotels, excellent restaurants, and a more relaxed stay. Keep in mind that if you're planning to watch the Copacabana fireworks, you'll probably want to take the metro unless you're comfortable with a long walk.
💰 Botafogo and Flamengo offer better value, especially if you don't mind using the metro to reach Copacabana.
🏖️ Barra da Tijuca only makes sense if you're planning to celebrate New Year's Eve there rather than in Copacabana.
Why your choice of neighborhood matters for New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro
Choosing the best area to stay in Rio during New Year's Eve isn't just about finding a nice or cheap hotel. It's about making one of Rio's busiest nights as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
On December 31st, millions of people head to Copacabana Beach. Main streets are closed for vehicles and although the metro runs throughout the night, stations can get extremely crowded. The metro also requires a special New Year's Eve ticket, sold in advance in the months leading up to the event. I explain how it works in my complete guide to New Year's Eve in Copacabana.
That's why my advice as a Carioca is simple: if you're coming to experience New Year's Eve in Copacabana, stay as close to the beach as your budget allows.
For this night, location isn't about luxury. It's about logistics.

Where to stay in Copacabana for New Year’s Eve
If it's your first New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro, this is where you should stay.
Staying in Copacabana lets you experience the celebration with the least amount of stress. You can walk to the beach, arrive early to secure a good spot and avoid worrying about transportation after midnight.
Hotels here are the most expensive in the city during New Year's Eve, but for many visitors, the convenience easily justifies the extra cost.
If possible, choose accommodation within a few blocks of Avenida Atlântica. Oceanfront hotels and vacation rentals offer the unique advantage of watching the fireworks without having to join the crowds on the beach. But if that's beyond your budget, staying nearby still gives you the biggest advantage of all: being able to walk to and from the celebration with ease.

Where to stay in Ipanema for New Year’s Eve

It's an excellent choice if you want to experience the celebration without staying in the middle of the crowds.

Where to stay in Leblon for New Year’s Eve

Flamengo is a great choice if you're looking for better hotel prices without staying too far from the action. The neighborhood hosts its own New Year's Eve celebration on Flamengo Beach, with fireworks and beautiful views of Sugarloaf Mountain. While much smaller than Copacabana's, it's a pleasant alternative if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.
If you decide to experience the main celebration instead, Copacabana is just a few metro stops away.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Windsor Florida Hotel — Modern hotel close to Flamengo Beach and Catete metro station. Check rates →
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hotel Regina Rio de Janeiro — Excellent value just a short walk from Flamengo Beach and the metro. Check rates →
Where to stay in Barra da Tijuca for New Year's Eve
Barra da Tijuca is a great choice if you're planning to celebrate New Year's Eve there. The neighborhood hosts its own fireworks display, attracting mostly locals and visitors staying in the area. If you prefer a quieter celebration and resort-style hotels, Barra is an excellent option.
However, I don't recommend staying here if your main goal is experiencing the Copacabana fireworks. Although the two neighborhoods may not seem far apart on the map, traffic and road closures on December 31st make the journey much longer and less predictable.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Windsor Marapendi Hotel — Beachfront hotel with spacious rooms overlooking Barra Beach. Check rates →
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wyndham Rio Barra — All-suite beachfront hotel, ideal for families and longer stays. Check rates →

Where not to stay if you're attending the Copacabana New Year’s Eve celebration
As a local, I'd happily stay in any of these neighborhoods during the rest of the year. For New Year's Eve, though, I'd prioritize convenience over almost everything else. Distance, traffic, road closures, and limited transportation can make getting to and from the fireworks much more complicated than usual.
Santa Teresa
One of Rio's most charming neighborhoods, but its steep streets and limited transportation options make returning after the fireworks less convenient.
Downtown Rio & Lapa
Great areas for sightseeing and nightlife throughout the year, but much quieter during the New Year's holiday. They're also farther from Copacabana, meaning you'll depend on walk to the metro to reach the celebration.
Urca
A beautiful and peaceful neighborhood with stunning views, but limited road access makes transportation more difficult on one of the busiest nights of the year.
Jardim Botânico & Gávea
Excellent neighborhoods for restaurants, greenery, and a local atmosphere. On New Year's Eve, however, traffic can be particularly heavy because of the large celebration at Jockey Club Brasileiro, making travel to and from Copacabana more challenging.
Hotel or vacation rental for New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro?
Both can be excellent choices for New Year's Eve in Rio and the best option depends on your travel style and the length of your stay.
If you're traveling as a couple, don't rule out hotels. Copacabana has one of the largest hotel selections in the city, and during New Year's Eve it's not uncommon to find hotel rooms priced similarly to, or even below, vacation rentals for two guests.
Vacation rentals are usually a better fit for families, larger groups, or travelers planning a longer stay. They offer more space and often better value, but many apartments require a minimum stay during the New Year's period, even if you're only visiting for the celebration.
If you're considering a beachfront apartment, compare it with nearby hotels before booking. You may find that a hotel offers a similar price with the added benefit of New Year's Eve events or fireworks views.
When to book your New Year's Eve accommodation in Rio de Janeiro
New Year's Eve is one of the busiest travel periods in Rio de Janeiro, especially in Copacabana. Hotels with fireworks views and beachfront vacation rentals are often among the first to sell out.
As a general rule:
January to June: The widest selection and, often, the best prices.
July to September: Still a good time to book, although the most sought-after hotels begin filling up.
October: Availability becomes more limited, especially in Copacabana and Ipanema, and prices usually increase.
November and December: Expect fewer choices and some of the highest rates of the year. If you're booking this late, you may need to consider neighborhoods like Botafogo or Flamengo for better availability.
If your travel dates are confirmed, I recommend booking as early as possible. Rio's best New Year's Eve hotels often sell out months before December 31st, and waiting rarely results in better prices.

Frequently asked question
Is Copacabana worth the extra cost for New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro?
Yes, especially if it's your first New Year's Eve in Rio. Staying in Copacabana means you can walk to the celebration, avoid transportation challenges after the fireworks, and experience the city's biggest event from the heart of the action. While the metro operates throughout the night, it requires a special New Year's Eve ticket and stations become extremely crowded after midnight.
If beachfront hotels are beyond your budget, look for accommodation a few blocks inland. You'll still enjoy the biggest advantage of staying in Copacabana: being able to walk to and from the celebration.
Can I walk from Ipanema to the Copacabana fireworks on New Year's Eve?
Yes. Depending on where you're staying in Ipanema, walking to Copacabana is often the easiest option on New Year's Eve. It lets you avoid crowded metro stations and traffic after the fireworks.
If you're staying in Leblon, however, the walk becomes much longer, and the metro is usually the more practical choice.
Do I need a special metro ticket for New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro?
Yes. Rio's metro operates throughout New Year's Eve, but a special event ticket is required on December 31st. These tickets are sold in advance and often become available a few months before the celebration.
If you're planning to rely on the metro, buy your ticket as soon as sales open.
Do hotels require a minimum stay during New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro?
Many hotels require a minimum stay, usually between three and five nights, although the exact policy varies by property.
Vacation rentals often have even longer minimum stays, with many apartments requiring five to seven nights during the holiday period.
Is Barra da Tijuca too far from the Copacabana celebration on New Year's Eve?
If your goal is attending the Copacabana fireworks, yes. Although Barra and Copacabana don't seem far apart on the map, heavy traffic and road closures on December 31st can make the journey much longer than expected.
Barra da Tijuca is a better choice if you plan to celebrate New Year's Eve there, where you'll find a smaller fireworks display and several beachfront hotels hosting their own events.
Is it better to stay in a hotel or a vacation rental for New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro?
For couples, hotels are often the better option. Copacabana has a large hotel network, and prices can be surprisingly competitive with vacation rentals during New Year's Eve.
Vacation rentals are usually a better fit for families, larger groups, or travelers staying for a week or longer, but remember that many require a minimum stay during the holiday period.
