Rio de Janeiro in February: Summer, Carnival and What to Expect

Intense, crowded, hot, lively: those words could easily describe Rio de Janeiro in February, but it all depends on one key event: Carnival. As Carnival doesn't follow a fixed calendar, February can be either busy or a calmer summer month. In 2027, Carnival happens from 5 to 10 February, which brings us to: intense, crowded, hot.

Beyond Carnival, February is when the summer school holidays are over and life starts getting back to normal. As someone who was born and raised in Rio, I call February's sweet spot the week (or weeks) before Carnival, when I get summer and the Carnival energy through the warm-ups, but not the crowds. If you are planning for Carnival, keep that in mind.

But while Carnival is the biggest draw, it's not the only one: February hosts more events and things to do. Whether you want the full Carnival experience or a calmer summer, here's how to plan for Rio de Janeiro in February: weather, events, things to do, and what to pack.

What to do in Rio de Janeiro in February

Experience Carnival

While the official Carnival 2027 dates run from 5 to 10 February, in Rio it starts way before that, and some of my favorite parties happen before Carnival. I wrote a series of guides to help you make the most of your trip: Pre-Carnival in Rio, if you are arriving before; the Blocos and street parties guide; the 2027 guide with tickets and how to purchase them; and What to expect from Carnival, if you don't know whether it's the right party for you, among others. Enjoy Rio de Janeiro beaches

In Rio we are blessed enough to have beaches as a year-round program, but during summer it's even better. Hot and humid days invite you for a swim, or a cold drink watching the ocean with sand under your feet. The city was built around the ocean and there are countless beaches to enjoy, from the world-famous Ipanema and Copacabana to hidden beaches in Grumari. To find the best beach for your trip, check the beaches guide.

Join the boteco culture

In Rio, social life happens on the sidewalk. Botecos, our casual corner bars, spill out onto the street with plastic tables and chairs, ice-cold chopp (draft beer) and plates to share. With warm evenings and the Carnival mood in the air, February is the best time to sit down, order another round and stay for hours, often chatting with the people at the next table. You don't need a plan: pick a corner with a crowd and join in. For more ideas on where to go after dark, check the nightlife guide.

Events in Rio de Janeiro in February

Iemanjá celebrations (2 February) — Salvador in Bahia hosts the biggest celebrations, but Rio de Janeiro has its share. Here locals honor Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea, with processions, music and offerings of flowers to the water. In recent years the main celebration has been at Arpoador, free to attend and now part of the city's official events calendar.

Carnival (5–10 February) — The official dates of Carnival in Rio, with the Sambadrome parades and street blocos. Check the Carnival guides above for tickets, blocos and tips.

Parade of Champions (13 February) — The winning samba schools parade again at the Sambadrome, for a second chance to see the best of this year's Carnival.

Rio Open (13–21 February) — South America's biggest ATP tournament, an ATP 500 played on clay at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, in a new and larger complex. Ticket pre-sale starts on 6 October and general sales on 13 October.

Weather and temperature in Rio de Janeiro in February

February is the heart of summer, and along with January it is the hottest and most humid stretch of the year. Daytime temperatures typically sit around 32°C (90°F), and humidity of about 79% makes it feel even hotter, while nights stay warm at around 24°C (75°F). The sea is warm too, about 26°C (79°F).

Rain is part of the package: roughly 157 mm falls over about 16 days, usually as short, heavy afternoon storms that cool the city down and clear within an hour or two. Mornings are often the clearest part of the day. On Sambadrome nights and at the blocos, the heat is part of the experience, so dress light and drink plenty of water.

For a broader look at how Rio's climate shifts across the year, the full weather guide covers it in detail. And in case a storm catches you, it's worth knowing what to do in Rio when it rains before you land.

What to pack for Rio de Janeiro in Carnival

Pack light, breathable clothes, a swimsuit, flip flops, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen (the sun is strong even on cloudy days). Add a compact rain jacket or poncho and sturdy shoes for hikes or the Sambadrome.

For Carnival, bring or buy something colorful, plus a small crossbody bag or a fanny pack worn in front. Use a phone strap and carry only what you need: some cash, an ID copy and one card. Keep your passport at the hotel.

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro in February

Accommodation prices in February follow the Carnival calendar closely. During the official Carnival days, hotels and rentals in the most popular areas reach their highest prices of the year, often with minimum stays of four to five nights, and the best locations sell out months in advance. The days before Carnival are calmer and noticeably cheaper, which is one more reason I love that stretch.

Where I'd look first for Carnival: hotels quick pick

Othon Palace Copacabana — Mid-range beachfront with rooftop pool, walkable to the action without being right in the densest crowd zone.
